Born on March 2, 1956, in Richmond, Virginia, Billy was the beloved son of the late William David Spradlin, Sr. and Marie Virginia Spradlin. He was a proud 1974 graduate of Douglas Southall Freeman High School, where he played baseball and discovered a love for acting. He went on to graduate from Old Dominion University, where he was an active member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. It was there that he formed lifelong friendships and made memories that he would treasure throughout his life. Most importantly, it was where he met his future wife.
Billy’s greatest love was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose generous heart and unwavering love enriched the lives of those around him. He cherished every opportunity to spend time with his family, creating memories that will be treasured for generations.
Billy found joy on the golf course as a longtime member of Hermitage Country Club. His lifelong love of music, especially The Beatles, was something he passed on to everyone around him. Whether he was sharing a deep cut or attempting to mimic John Lennon's falsetto, his love for music was contagious. We will always think of him whenever we hear a Beatles song.
Billy dedicated more than 40 years of his career to the chemical adhesives industry. He began his career with National Starch and Chemical Company, where he worked for almost 20 years before joining Ellsworth Adhesives. During his more than 20 years as a sales engineer with Ellsworth, Billy’s exceptional work ethic, drive, and ability to connect with anyone helped him achieve tremendous success. People were drawn to him because he genuinely cared for everyone and was intimidated by no one. His smile and ability to crack a joke didn’t hurt, either.
Billy is survived by his devoted wife of 42 years, Francine Elizabeth Spradlin; his daughter, Elizabeth Marie Knarr and her husband, Tyler, and their sons, Thomas and Luke; his son, David Patrick Spradlin and his wife, Kinsey, and their daughter, Sadie; and his daughter, Mary Grace Gingras and her husband, Ryan. His family was the center of his world, and he took immense pride in each of them.
A Mass celebrating Billy’s life will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Road, Richmond, Virginia 23229. A reception will immediately follow the service, where family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate Billy’s life.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Circle Center Adult Day Services, Alpha House at Hanover Manor, and Legacy Hospice of Richmond for the exceptional care, kindness, and dignity they provided to Billy. Their support and devotion brought great comfort to both Billy and his loved ones during his final days.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Circle Center Adult Day Services or St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
