William John Reed, affectionately known as “Little John,” 71, peacefully departed this life surrounded by his family on May 26, 2024, in Richmond, Virginia. A long-time resident of Chesapeake, Virginia, John's legacy is one of love, dedication, and service.
John was born to Marion and William D. Reed, and he was preceded in death by his father, his brother David “Chucky” Reed, and his brother-in-law Todd Corbet. He is survived by his cherished wife of nearly 48 years, Kathy Toher Reed, their children Christopher J. Reed (Susan Reed), Kelly T. Reed (Daniel Waters), Jen Daughton (Jon Daughton), as well as his grandchildren Hunter Graham, Alyssa Reed, Christina Reed, Lexi Carpenter, Abigial Hupp, Kalyn Waters, and Colin Waters. He is also survived by his mother, his sister Donna Corbet, his brothers Kenneth and Paul Reed, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
John's life was marked by unwavering devotion to his family, his warm embraces, his infectious humor, and his steadfastness as a man who lived life on his own terms, yet always with an open heart for those in need. If one were to sum up John's essence in two words, they would be “Family Man.”
A proud veteran, John served in the U.S. Marine Corps before dedicating forty-four years of service at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, retiring in 2020. His commitment extended beyond his professional life; he was deeply involved in his Masonic Family, serving as a Master Mason in the Berkley Masonic Lodge #167, and later as its Chaplain. He was also an active member of the Khedive Shrine, contributing his time to various endeavors such as the Khedive Color Guard and the Chesapeake Shrine Club.
Beyond his commitments, John found joy in simple pleasures. He relished the camaraderie of golfing, the restoration of his beloved El Camino, motorcycle riding and the adventures of camping and traveling in his RV alongside Kathy and their circle of friends. Cornhole, fishing, darts, pool, karaoke — these were among the many ways he delighted in spending time with loved ones.
Donations can be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, as well as, Berkley Masonic Lodge #167, organizations that were close to his heart. Contributions can be made online or mailed to 2216 Old Greenbrier RD, Chesapeake, VA 23325.
