Walter Robert Hitchcock

Our beloved Walter Robert Hitchcock, 77 of Richmond, VA passed away on Monday, July 8, 2024 after a long battle with cancer.

Walt was born on February 16, 1947 to Robert and Norma Hitchcock of Erie, PA. He attended Alderson Broaddus University then Wilkes University (MBA). Before moving to Richmond, Walt resided in Bethlehem, PA and had a successful career at Bethlehem Steel in Accounting.

Walt left behind his wife, Marsha Teresa Hitchcock of a beautiful marriage of 24 years. Walt’s greatest joy was spending time with Marsha. They had many years of worldwide travel adventures throughout their marriage. In the last few years, Marsha cared for him sacrificially and with love and grace.

Walt was known for his many volunteer activities. He handled countless maintenance projects at his home church, St. Giles Presbyterian upon his retirement. He was a tutor for many years with Elijah House Academy. He and Marsha have ushered for local theaters with “The Penguins”. The Walt Hitchcock Spirit Award has been created to honor his memory for the ushers at the Atria and Dominion Energy Center theaters. Every year they will continue to honor him by giving the award to a new recipient. Ushering was a joyful part of Walt's life.

Walt was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Norma Hitchcock. He is survived by his siblings: Leonie Degnan (Al), Betty Filley (Ken), Jeannie Curtis (Bob), Bill Hitchcock (Kim), and Pete Hitchcock (Pam).

Walt was a beloved father to Heath Hitchcock (Kathleen) and Holly Hitchcock. He was stepfather to Mark Jones (Barbara) and Denise Spoenlein (Jeff). Walt was a beloved grandfather to Conrad Jones, Julia Jones and Riley Spoenlein. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life service will be held at St. Giles Presbyterian Church at 5200 Grove Ave, Richmond, VA 23226 at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2024.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to VCU Cancer Center or Elijah House Academy in Richmond.
