Thomas Henry Smith of Richmond, VA passed from this life on November 24, 2020 at the age of 69 after a thankfully brief, yet courageous battle with lung disease. Born August 16, 1951 in Key West, Florida to Helen Hoppe and Charles Ross Smith Jr., Capt. USN. Tommy’s early years mirrored those of many military families, traveling across the country to follow his father’s postings. These travels informed and enriched his understanding of the world and the various cultures that make it, helping him to develop an open and compassionate mindset that made him want to make a difference in the world. That he did. Throughout his life, he lent his time and resources to those in need through multiple philanthropic endeavors like Habitat for Humanity. From becoming one of the founding members of Norfolk’s Walk for Hunger at just 18 years old, to spending his weekends volunteering for the Elmer Toth Food Pantry in his later years, he truly did leave this world better than he found it.
He possessed a quick and ingenious mind that, when not coming up with intricate pranks, he used to become a masterful carpenter, computer network engineer, and skilled martial artist. He was a voracious reader, lending him a talent for storytelling that he used to both entertain and terrorize his siblings with the ghost stories he told on family camping trips.
Throughout his life, he assumed many roles. A loving brother, trusted son, loyal friend, devoted husband, and proud father. His passing leaves a hole in all of our hearts, but it is one we fill together with memories of the love, laughter, and even the tears, we shared with him.
Tommy leaves behind his beloved life partner, Jill Marks, his stepchildren, Austin Marks and Casey Marks Bredl, his seven siblings Ross, Lynn, Peter, Paul, Michael (Nicanor Dayalo), Kate (Philip Utley), Stephen, nieces and nephews Alexi Chapin-Smith (Jen), Luke Smith, Morrigan Smith (Shawn), Whitney Smith, Keenan Smith, Britt Smith (Chris Fullman), Samantha Smith, and several grand nieces and nephews.
A virtual service is scheduled for December 6th at 4PM for family and close friends. For more information, please contact Michael Smith. In lieu of flowers, please donate to one of his favorite organizations, Habitat for Humanity.
