Born and raised in Easton, Pennsylvania, Stephen carried his love of music and community with him throughout his life. He spent many years in Doylestown, Pennsylvania before calling Richmond, Virginia his home for the past 25 years.
Stephen was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle and an accomplished musician whose life was deeply rooted in his love of music and service to others. An avid organist, he faithfully played for church services every Sunday, sharing his talent and passion with his congregation for decades. As a dedicated Director of Music, he guided and inspired countless individuals through his leadership and mentorship.
He was an active and valued member of the Richmond Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, forming lasting friendships and contributing significantly to the musical community. His love of the organ took him far beyond his local church, as he played countless organs across the United States and throughout Europe, sharing his gift with thousands and leaving a lasting impression wherever he played.
He is survived by his loving children: Stephanie Ann Felton and her husband, Scott, of Harleysville, Pennsylvania; Scott Christopher Henley of Doylestown, Pennsylvania; and Jennifer Henley of Virginia Beach, Virginia. He also leaves behind four beloved grandchildren: Emma and Nolan Felton, and Hannah and Haley Caldwell, who brought him immense pride and joy. Whether it was going out for ice cream, attending the annual Harleysville fair, or eating out, where the entire wait staff would know him by name, the moments will be forever treasured.
In addition to his children and grandchildren, Stephen is survived by his siblings: Charlotte Henley; Mark Henley and his wife, Melody; Lisa Henley; Diane Henley; and Tiffany Martin and her husband, Alec. He also leaves behind a countless number of nieces and nephews, with whom he cherished spending holiday dinners and picnics by the pool.
Stephen will be remembered for his deep faith, and the music that defined his life. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched and in the countless notes that continue to echo from the organ he so dearly loved.
A service to honor his life will be held on Saturday, April 25th at 11:00 am at Bon Air Presbyterian Church, where family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate his memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to The Richmond Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, in his honor. Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 8644, Richmond, VA 23226.
“My life flows on in endless song, above earth’s lamentation;
I hear the real, though far-off hymn that hails a new creation.
Through all the tumult and the strife, I hear that music ringing;
It sounds an echo in my soul—how can I keep from singing?”
Steve will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
