Michael Robert Shalett, Sr., died peacefully on June 2, 2026. Born in New York, NY, in 1940, Mike grew up in Washington, D.C., and spent much of his life as President of Loret Marina on Lake Chickamauga near Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Mike was a voracious reader, an award-winning photographer, and an accomplished craftsman of clay pots and unique southwestern baskets. He loved to travel, and with Lori, his wife of 64 years, explored the world — from Scandinavia and Europe to Latin America. His greatest affection, though, was reserved for the American Southwest, where he lived for a decade.
Though his cooking skills began and ended at the grill, he loved a great meal — and made no secret of his feelings about a bad one. He enjoyed good company, spy novels, action movies, the outdoors, and most animals, especially dogs, which were a constant presence throughout his life. A loyal Washington Redskins fan, he also loved college basketball and was a longtime season-ticket holder for the UTC Mocs.
He coached his daughter's softball teams in East Ridge, Tennessee, winning the city championship in the late 1970s, and took tremendous pride in his family and their accomplishments.
Mike is survived by his wife, Lori; his daughter Sheila Martin (John); his son Michael Robert Shalett, Jr. (Jill), and their daughters Estelle Ruth and Anita Rose; his brother John (Ellen Rae); and the family dog, Carlie. He was the son of Sidney Shalett and Anita Effron Shalett of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
