Lyla Asbury Buchanan

Lyla was preceded in death by her father, Basil Faren Asbury, and her mother, Virginia Lee Perkinson. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Russell Todd Buchanan; daughter, Laura Buchanan Longmire and her husband, Abe, of Ashland; and brother Basil Faren Asbury and his wife Diane of Reedville, and their children January and Jeremy. She was a proud and loving "Nana" to her granddaughters, Stella and Elizabeth. She will be greatly missed by her family.

Born in Richlands, Virginia on August 6, 1946, Lyla graduated from Virginia Tech in 1968 and got her Master’s from VCU. She was a member of Cool Spring Baptist Church and a former member for 33 years at First Baptist Church Ashland. She was always supportive and active in church activities. Lyla was a high school teacher before she decided to stay home to raise her daughter. Lyla will be remembered as a good Christian woman, always thoughtful of others, easy to talk to, and the kind of person that strikes up a conversation with a stranger in line at the grocery store. Always generous and mindful of others, she made friends everywhere she went. A Master Gardener, she loved growing flowers, especially orchids, and sharing with others. She was a great cook and loved family reunions and entertaining family and friends on all the holidays. She was a beautiful loving wife, and a wonderful companion who will be sorely missed by her husband.

The family will receive friends from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2022 at First Baptist Church Ashland, with a memorial service the following day on Friday June 3, at 11 a.m., at the same church, reception following.
