Larry Sanford Shifflett was born on January 8, 1938, in Elkton, Virginia. Raised on his grandmother’s farm, he quickly decided that farming was not the path he wished to pursue. After graduating from high school in 1957, he moved to Richmond, where he attended Virginia Commonwealth University and worked in the Design Group at Reynolds Metals.
In 1961, Larry entered the United States Air Force, serving in Intelligence until 1965. His military service took him abroad for two years in Japan and two years in Germany. During this time, he developed a lifelong love of travel and exploring new places and cultures.
Upon completing his service, Larry returned to Richmond and married the love of his life, Matilda Ann Scheitlin. With the support of the GI Bill, he continued his education at Virginia Tech, where he studied Architecture. In 1969, he was awarded the School Medal of the American Institute of Architects for General Excellence in Architecture. He earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1970 and went on to receive a Master of Architecture degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1971.
Larry enjoyed a distinguished and multifaceted career as an architect, developer, owner, and manager of multifamily housing communities throughout Virginia. His professional accomplishments reflected both his vision and dedication, and he took great pride in the projects he brought to life.
An avid traveler, Larry continued exploring the world throughout his life, inspired by the experiences he first gained while stationed overseas.
Larry passed peacefully, transitioning seamlessly from this life to the next.
He is survived by his sons, Garrett Sanford Shifflett (Nicolette) and Lory Heiston Shifflett, both of whom made him immensely proud. Larry considered Nicolette the daughter he never had. He was a loving and devoted grandfather—known affectionately as “Pop”—to Emilyn Corrine Shifflett and Graysen Riggs Shifflett.
Larry was preceded in death by his mother, Mae Morris Shifflett Leavitt; his stepfather, Lewis H. Leavitt; his father, Jess Maynard Shifflett; and his sister, Beverly Shifflett Jordan Anthony.
Larry will be remembered for his loving nature, kindness, devotion to family, love of travel, his many accomplishments, and the legacy he leaves behind.
