Joanne Hartman Rose passed away September 14, 2024. Daughter of Joseph & Doris Hartman, predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Charles Robert Fletcher Rose, she is survived by her son, Doug Rose and his wife, Cheryl Rose, two grandsons, Aaron and Cameron, and step-granddaughter, Hannah Chan and her husband, Kevin Chan. She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother.
Joanne was a life-long educator of 48 years. She started teaching at Ridge Elementary School in the early 1960's and didn’t stop until she finally retired from Reveille Weekday School in 2015. She often recalled having taught a generation of children, then their children, and then their grandchildren. She adored the children & their families and was frequently recognized around Richmond by one generation or another. Joanne spent 19 years in West Point, VA serving as an active member of the community. She participated in local organizations, was a substitute teacher in West Point Public Schools, was an avid supporter of school bands and youth sports, and gave generously of her time to many elderly or infirmed family and friends, something she continued to do until she had to face her own illness this year. Formerly a member of West Point United Methodist Church, she helped in many ways to grow the church and its outreach by engaging others to get involved and putting in countless hours of service. Joanne was also a devoted member of Reveille United Methodist Church in Richmond, where she worked with her husband to manage the Awake & Alive program for new members. She spent many years as a representative for the church as a bridal consultant, having directed countless weddings. She amassed enough detail, notes, and directions to guide any bride or groom, including her step-granddaughter. She felt fortunate to have been able to contribute to so many young people’s steps down the aisle. She did all of this while also working at Schwarzchild Jewelers in the bridal division or at Taylor Hogan's. Anyone who knew her was in awe of the energy she found to do so much.
Joanne was a graduate of Longwood University and John Marshall High School. She was an active alumna having coordinated and participated in milestone reunion events for both. She maintained life-long friendships with those she met in school, while teaching, at church, in neighborhoods she lived in… she never met a stranger and could make a friend most anywhere she went.
Funeral services will be at 1 pm on Saturday, September 28th, at Reveille United Methodist Church, 4200 Cary Street Road, Richmond VA. A reception will be held immediately following the service in the Welcome Center. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions to Reveille Weekday School or the National Parkinson's Foundation.
