Born in Maryland to George and Genevieve Arnold, Jean married John H. Miller III and raised two children. She was a teacher through and through. Teaching was more than a career; it was her passion and purpose. A graduate of Towson State College, she went on to earn two master's degrees from Johns Hopkins University. She taught in Baltimore County, served as a principal in Baltimore, and even spent a short time teaching on television.
After moving to Chesterfield, Virginia, in 1976, Jean spent 13 years at The Steward School as Head of the Lower School. She taught study skills and developed the curriculum and taught one of the school's first computer classes before later continuing her career in Richmond City schools. During her first summer in Chesterfield, she started Miller’s Summer Camp for neighborhood kids, filling their days with nature walks, bike rides, trips to the pool and more.
In retirement, Jean discovered a new passion: painting. She worked in watercolors, oils, and acrylics creating beautiful flowers, landscapes, portraits, and even pet portraits. She especially loved exhibiting her work at art shows and sharing it with her friends and family.
After moving to Henrico County, Jean found a wonderful community of friends. Her neighbors became dear friends, and their get-togethers were always full of laughter. Jean was kind, caring and fun-loving. She enjoyed a glass or two of wine with friends and her smile and laughter could light up the room. She will be remembered for her warmth, generous spirit, and the joy she brought to those around her.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband in 2006. She is survived by her daughter, Maribeth Miller (Billy Taylor); her son, John "Jay" H. Miller IV (Sandy); and six grandchildren: Trace, Jack, George, Matthew, Summer and Preston.
There will be no service at this time.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to celebrate Jean's life and remember the good times, sharing a favorite story, and raising a glass in her honor. A glass of wine would be just the right way to celebrate Jean’s life.
