Jan Carl Strasburger

Jim was one of the rare leap year babies born at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey to Marjorie Trexler and Edward Strasburger.

During his childhood, Jim loved to travel around on his roller skates and make money delivering newspapers on his bike in the neighborhood. He and his brother were known to throw snowballs at cars then run through backyards to get away. Sometimes they were known to grab car bumpers and go for rides through the many boroughs of the city.

In 1976, Jim moved down south finding himself in the fan district in Richmond, VA. His occupation was a painter, mostly residential but would never turn down an odd job no matter the size. He found his way to Hanover County a few years later where he met the love of his life, Freda, and they began to share their love of yard sales, dancing and listening to music. He would sing Conway Twitty’s “Hello Darlin” to her as they had cocktails in the kitchen with their devoted Lhasa Apso “Muffin” right beside them. He and Freda married on April 18, 1987 in Ashland, Virginia during a quiet ceremony in their home.

Jim was tall in stature but quiet and gentle in nature. He loved listening to the “oldies” when driving around and was known to grab the microphone on any given karaoke stage. He never turned down a sweet dessert and always made sure his loved ones received a handwritten card for every occasion. Later, years after Freda died, Jim moved around the Hanover area where he made many friends along the way who helped him in his journey. In the later part of his life, he was welcomed at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Hanover Courthouse where he was surrounded by many new friends through Christ.

Jim was predeceased by his mother, Marjorie Trexler Adamski, father, Edward, F. Strasburger, brother Edward Strasburger and the “love of his life” Freda. He is survived by his step-daughter Rhonda Altizer, 4 grandchildren, Eric Cash, Brandy Alfonso, Roxy Berry, Ronnie Altizer, and 5 great grandchildren, Rayna, Kendra, Alexis, Jacy and Alani. He is also survived by his devoted friend Sandra Heins as well as Tommy Heins, Kevin Engel and Thomas Lamb.

A funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Hanover Courthouse, 8050 St. Paul's Church Road, Hanover, VA 23069, on Saturday, August 15 at 2:00 pm with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul’s Outreach or your local food bank.
