A lifelong Henrico County resident, James is survived by his wife of 48 years, Shirley Durvin Uzel; daughter, Teresa Nelson; son, Christopher Steven Uzel (Heather); five grandchildren (Clayton England, Gabrielle Nelson Dunham (Nathan), Colby Uzel, Brady Uzel, Cambre Uzel); four great-grandchildren (Amity England, Sebastian Dunham, Oliver Dunham, Isaac James Dunham); four sisters (Carol West (Ray), Rose Tanner (Ken), Karen Petri (Bob), Sharon Honey); brother-in-law, T.L. “Joe” Durvin; and many loving nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. James was pre-deceased by his parents, John and Virginia Uzel and his three older siblings (John, Jr., Phyllis Johnson, Ann Faison).
James is truly loved by his and his wife’s families and is deeply missed by them and by his many antique car, church, school, work, and YMCA friends, and long-time neighbors. James attended St. Patrick School, Varina High School, and Nashville Auto-Diesel College. He worked for RF&P RR and CSX Transportation for 40 years, retiring in 2005.
In retirement, James enjoyed exercising and socializing at the YMCA and showing and cruising in the ’63 Chevy Impala SS he restored. He always loved to build items from wood or metal and was skilled at both. He liked the challenge of repairing things. James was always willing to help others when he could and was kind and generous. He was a loyal friend to many and a great hugger! James loved his faith, family, and friends.
