
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard A. and Anne Marie Gillespie.
He is survived by his spouse, Sharon Sue (Susie) Gillespie; sons, James L. and Jonathan R. Gillespie, and their spouses; daughter, Emma-Lee Marie Hunter and her spouse; brother, Richard Gillespie and his spouse; sisters, Barbara Dennis and Pat Fredette, and their spouses; and grandchildren, Theodore Patrick Gillespie, Jolene Marie Gillespie, and Scarlett Elizabeth Hunter.
James graduated with a BS in Biology from the Virginia Military Institute, and he received his MBA from Strayer University.
James proudly served our country in the Army/Army Reserve. His leadership and compassion earned him the National Defense Service Medal and his ranking as Captain Infantry Unit Commander.
He later retired from Raytheon as a Safety Engineer.
James was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Fredericksburg, 810 Princess Anne St. Fredericksburg, VA 22401, where a service will be held at 10am on May 14, 2026. The Reverend Elizabeth Lovell Milford will be leading the officiating. A burial in the Fredericksburg City Cemetery will follow.
