It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Herbert E. Kennedy of Henrico, Virginia. He left us peacefully on December 13th, surrounded by family and was 88 years old. Herbert is survived by wife of 65 years, Rebecca Kennedy; daughters, Denise Newton, Anita McLoughlin, Lauri Ragosta (Ralph), and granddaughter that he raised since birth Kelly Roll (Evan); grandchildren, Bradley, Mary (Shane), George, Koa, and great-grandchildren, Brittany, Everly, and Chloe; brother, Garnett Kennedy (Judith). He was preceded in death by parents Clarence and Norma Kennedy.
Herbert was a proud graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School Class of 1954 in Richmond, Virginia. He later attended classes at Richmond Professional Institute (RPI) and J. Sargeant Reynolds. He proudly served in the Navy Reserves for 8 years. He worked as a claims adjuster for 30 years at Nationwide Insurance.
Herbert enjoyed living on the “Kennedy Compound,” working outdoors, organic gardening, and raising chickens. He later became a master gardener and contributed as a guest instructor at J. Sargeant Reynolds horticultural program. He also was a former vice president and treasurer of the Virginia Poultry Breeders Association and raised prize winning bantam chickens.
Herbert was interested in genealogy and history and was able to research and trace back many generations of his family tree. He was well known for throwing annual family reunion picnics. Herbert was a caring neighbor that would regularly call, visit, and bring treats to those in the neighborhood. In his younger days, Herbert would get on his tractor and snow plow the neighborhood and driveways, even in very bad weather. The neighbors were so grateful for this generous act of kindness. He was able to strike up a conversation with anyone and really enjoyed telling and hearing stories of days gone by. Later in life, Herbert enjoyed the company of the many rescue cats that his wife adopted.
May he rest in peace, knowing he was appreciated as a good provider and always remembered with love.
Remains to be cremated and a memorial service will be held for family and friends in March 2025 with details to follow.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to your local food bank and/or to the Richmond SPCA.
