David “Dave” Keith Martinez of Henrico, Virginia. Born in Massachusetts July 17, 1954. Traded in his earthly boots for brighter skies on November 9, 2025, after giving cancer one stubborn and hard-fought battle.
We’re pretty sure he arrived in heaven with a sarcastic comment and a flamingo decor welcome mat.
Dave was greeted by the love of his life, his wife, Phyllis Mondak, his parents Richard & Ellen, and his brothers William & Peter — a reunion we can only imagine involved hugs, storytelling, and at least one smart-mouthed joke. He leaves behind a loving crew who will miss him deeply, including his son, Keith, of Prince William, VA, and his daughter, Kristin (Ryan) of Goochland, VA — along with the grandkids who kept his heart full and his teasing skills well-practiced: Wayne, Sydney, Kaley & Sebastian. He is also survived by his stepsons, Andrew (Margaret) of Maine , and their wonderful children who added joy to his life: Avisha and Loudon. Also Daniel (Charlye) of Richmond Completing his large and lively family are his siblings Richard, Michael (Rhonda), Timothy, Paul (Melissa), James, and sister Joanne (Roger), who will forever share memories that are equal parts heartfelt and hilarious.
For 20 years, Dave proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps, retiring in 1993. He went on to earn a degree in Kinesiotherapy and continued his heart-for-others career at the Richmond VA Hospital until his second retirement in 2022. Dave loved his country, his Marines, and any excuse to relive history through Civil War reenactments.
He will be remembered for his devotion to family and friends, his service, his authenticity, and his ability to make people feel seen, supported, and occasionally lovingly roasted. Dave had grit, heart, humor, and — if you ask his daughter — a little too much sarcasm… but we loved it anyway.
The family will be planning a memorial gathering sometime early 2026 information will be posted on Davids Facebook page. In his honor, you may raise a toast, share a story, hug your people tight, or put a plastic flamingo in your yard — the brighter, the better.
Semper Fi, Dave. 💗🦩
