

Daniel McCarty Johnston, 92, of Victoria, Texas, passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2024. His was a long and fulfilled life. He enjoyed time outdoors whether hunting, fishing, playing golf and gatherings with family and friends. He is survived by his children, Dan Jr. and Pam; grandchildren, Gavin (Danielle) and Rebecca (Ross); and great-grandchildren, Teddy, Elliana, Evan, and Leo.
Dan enlisted into the United States Marine Corps on Memorial Day in 1950. He served and discharged as a Korean War Veteran on Memorial Day in 1955. In 1956, he began his career at the Richmond Times Dispatch/News Leader, in the advertising department until his retirement in 1991. He served as a Boy Scout Council Leader while his son Dan was a scout.
As a member of the American Legion Post 244 for 53 years, he was Legionnaire of the Year in 1974 and Post Commander from 1975-1976. He helped organize the annual Virginia Boys State and served in numerous volunteer duties. Dan was a life member of VFW Post 6364.
Dan revered our country and faithfully displayed the flag at his home.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00 PM-4:00 PM on Sunday, June 2, 2024 at the VFW Post 6364, 6502 Dickens Place, Richmond, VA 23230. The family will have a private military honors funeral at Quantico National Cemetery at a future date. In lieu of flowers and in honor of his life and service, please make a memorial donation to your favorite Veterans organization.
