Dorothy Anne Strathie, 96, of Glen Allen, VA, and formerly of Largo, FL, passed away on March 28, 2026, at Westport Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Richmond, VA. Anne was born in October 1929 in Bucks County, PA, to the late Edmund (“Ted”) and Dorothy (“Dottie”) Aldrich.
She was preceded in death, by husband, James (“Jungle”) Strathie and sister, Theodora (“Theo”) Johnson.
Anne is survived by her four children from her first marriage to James Gambini: Jim Gambini of GA, Beth Hoilman (Charles) of VA, Toni Gambini of IL, and John Gambini of VA; grandchildren: Jonathan Gambini (Norma) of GA, Andrew (Kallan) of VA, and Annie Hogge (Jake) of VA; several great-grandchildren, including Jamie and Simon Gambini of GA; nephews, Lamont and Lars Johnson.
Anne was born and raised a Quaker and remained Quaker throughout her life. She attended Buckingham Friends School thru 8th grade, then attended and graduated from Council Rock High School, and attended Kutztown State Teacher’s College for a period of time. She married James Gambini, and they settled in Levittown, PA for several years with their four children. During that time, she created her own clothing label, designing and sewing outfits for her two daughters. In 1965 they built a house and moved their family to Newtown, PA, where she was a bus driver for the Council Rock School District for many years. While there, she renewed her love of the flute, joining the Tri-County Band, playing concerts and parades.
In 1979 she moved to Largo, FL, with her husband, James (“Jungle”) Strathie, where they enjoyed boating, square dancing, and roller skating, and she became a member of Clearwater Friends Meeting. Anne continued her love of playing flute and piccolo by joining the Clearwater Community Band. She was a member for over 30 years.
After, “Jungle” passed away, Anne planned a solo road trip visiting with family members, crossing the country from Largo to CA. She traveled with a group to Alaska. She went sky-diving at the age of 76, not once, but twice! And she returned to college, completing her Associate’s Degree in December 2000.
In 2013, several years after Jungle’s passing, Anne moved from Largo to Glen Allen, VA, to be closer to family.
In Virginia, Anne found a warm welcome in joining the Midlothian Friends Meeting where she attended weekly worship services for many years. She continued her love of the flute by joining the Henrico Concert Band and the Richmond Concert Band, playing in both for several years. Her most memorable experience was participating in the Richmond Symphony’s “Come and Play” in 2014.
Anne is survived by her many Friends of Midlothian Meeting, as well as her two very special Florida friends, Nancy F. (Anne’s BFF),
and Jeff S.
Anne’s family is extremely thankful for three special ladies, Suzy, Debbie and Michelle, of Naborforce, who spent time with Anne each weekday, taking her outside to enjoy the sun on her face, listening to stories of her family and her life, reading to her, and just being together with her.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later time.
Donations, in Anne’s memory, can be sent to Midlothian Friends Meeting, PO Box 1003, Midlothian, VA 23113.
