Born on March 28, 1936, in London, England, Bernard graduated with honors from the University of London in 1960, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. In 1967, he immigrated to the United States with his family, initially settling in Rhode Island before moving to South Carolina, where he made his home for more than five decades.
Bernard pursued a lifelong career as a textile chemist, putting his keen intellect and analytical mind to work in his chosen field. A prolific inventor, he was named on at least 22 patents related to resin formulations, textile treatments, and paper enhancements.
An intelligent and thoughtful man with a distinctly dry sense of humor, Bernard was proud of his English heritage. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing tennis and soccer, and he remained a devoted Arsenal supporter throughout his life.
Bernard was preceded in death by his first wife, Audrey, and his second wife, Arlene.
He is survived by his daughter, Karen; his son, Mark; his granddaughter, Kristin; his stepchildren, Susie, Josie, James, and Joe; and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Bernard will be remembered for his sharp mind, his understated wit, and the life he built on both sides of the Atlantic.
A memorial for Bernard will be held in Rock Hill in the spring of 2027.
