Tony passed away peacefully on October 7, after a brief illness, at age 62.
He was unwavering in his spirituality and devotion - an extraordinarily dedicated, endlessly supportive and deeply loving husband, father, brother, son and friend. He is survived by his beloved wife Christy of 35 years, adored children Christopher and Amanda, cherished sister Sharon McCarthy (Jim), revered father-in-law Johnny Beckstoffer (Robin) as well as precious nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his extensive family of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends for whom he was grateful and treasured dearly, they surrounded him always with love.
He was preceded in death by his mother Ann Thomas Arrington and father Lenwood Arrington.
Growing up in Lawrenceville, VA, Tony had fond memories of his early life, playing and working in the fields for his family’s tobacco farming business. His strong work ethic was developing from the early age of 11 years. He played on his high school football team and was voted “best legs” in his senior year!
Tony graduated from Virginia Tech in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Technology. Afterwards, he accepted a position as a Meat Inspector for the State of Virginia. He left that job to travel around the country, exploring, experiencing and attending Grateful Dead shows. Upon returning, he continued his education by completing both the American Culinary Federation and J. Sargeant Reynolds Culinary Programs concurrently, further refining his culinary expertise.
For three decades, Tony devoted his career to the culinary arts. He spent most of this time serving as the Executive Chef or Director for Meriwether Godsey, where he worked for 26 years before retiring in May of this year. Throughout his career, Tony profoundly impacted the lives of many people. He dedicated himself to mentoring others, sharing his passion for the culinary arts by teaching and lovingly preparing meals that were both delicious and nutritious. He was innovative and forward-thinking in his approach; as one friend put it, he embraced local sourcing and sustainability long before it was cool.
Tony loved being outdoors and traveling with his wife and kids. He enjoyed camping, gardening, reading, history and tending to his chickens. He had a passion for music. He hit the road with family and friends, as often as he could, to see his favorite bands perform. Through his love of music and food, he developed many strong, lifelong friendships. One of his favorite places to be, was under a star-filled night sky, surrounded by family and friends, listening to music, sharing meals and telling stories.
Tony will be so deeply missed by all those who had the privilege of knowing and loving him. His wicked-sharp wit, compassion, kindness, honesty and sense of fairness. His ability to stay calm under any circumstance. The way he connected with people on a deep and meaningful level. How he brought people together. And how he made people laugh by doing something silly when it was least expected. The world feels a little less bright without him in it. How lucky we were to have known him!
In lieu of flowers, donations will be collected at the service, proceeds will be divided amongst Animal Rescue Groups and Hospice Services.
Celebration of Life will be at St. Catherine’s School on Sunday, November 2, at 2 PM – 6001 Grove Avenue Richmond, VA 23226.
