Born in Chicago on November 9, 1944 to George and Elizabeth (Wilson) Rumsey, Tom spent his childhood in New Jersey and Rochester, New York. He was passionate about history from an early age and earned his bachelor’s degree from Hamilton College and his master’s and PhD from the University of Virginia.
A gifted educator, Tom taught high school history for over forty years, first at the Harrisburg Academy in Pennsylvania and later at Casady School in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was also the author of two textbooks on European History. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Tom served as a College Counselor at both schools, and he greatly enjoyed helping students identify colleges that would be a good educational, philosophical, and social match.
Upon retirement, Tom fulfilled a lifelong dream of owning a home in the woods with a personal library. He spent the bulk of his golden years reading, writing, watching movies, and collecting political cartoons.
Tom’s affection for scholarly pursuits was eclipsed only by his love for family. His beloved wife, Marianne (Nesbitt) Rumsey predeceased him in 2018. He is survived by two daughters, Darcie (Kenneth) of Baltimore, MD and Cecilia (John) of Charlottesville, VA, two grandchildren, and a great- granddaughter. Additional survivors include his four siblings and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the staffs at The Blake of Charlottesville and Hospice of the Piedmont who provided excellent and compassionate care to him.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at a later date.
Donations in Tom’s memory can be made to Hospice of the Piedmont.
