Richard (Bunky) Smith passed away peacefully on the morning of September 5, 2025. Bunky was born on October 28, 1936. He was raised in Washington, DC where he attended Sousa Junior High School and Anacostia High School. At Anacostia, Bunky was a standout on the varsity football and basketball teams and was a member of the 1954 DC Interhigh football championship team. It was also at Anacostia that Bunky met the love of his life, Betty. The two were married in 1957 and enjoyed over 60 years of happiness together until Betty’s passing in 2018.
Bunky joined the Washington, DC fire department in 1964, where he served bravely and rose to the rank of lieutenant. He retired in 1987. Bunky and Betty raised their family in Sterling, VA where Bunky was very active in the community. He was president of the local Jaycees chapter in 1968 and coached youth football and baseball for many years. He loved his Friday afternoons at the Sterling Park golf course, where he and a regular group of friends played for fun and beer money.
Bunky is survived by his sons Mark (Anna) and Jeff (Caryn) as well as seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life is tentatively scheduled for November 16; more details will be forthcoming.
