Michael Leroy Doering

It is with great sadness that the Doering family announces the passing of Michael Leroy Doering, who died peacefully on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, in Gainesville, Virginia, at the age of 77.

Mike was born on June 23, 1949, in Gaylord, Minnesota, to Leroy and Betty Doering. He grew up on a beautiful farm in the same town, where he learned the values of hard work, integrity, and dedication that would shape his life.

Mike served honorably in the United States Army for 22 years, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant before retiring in 1991. During his distinguished military career, he served at duty stations throughout the United States and Germany and proudly served during Operation Desert Storm. As a qualified paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division, Mike was proud to wear the maroon beret, a symbol of his service among the Army’s airborne forces. He received numerous military honors, including the Meritorious Service Medal, multiple Army Commendation and Achievement Medals, the Parachutist Badge, and the German Armed Forces Marksmanship Badge in Bronze. He retired in 1991 after more than two decades of distinguished service, leadership, and dedication to his country.

Following his retirement from the Army, Mike began a second career as a Geotechnical Engineer with G.C.T., where he spent the remainder of his working years. He was respected by colleagues for his strong work ethic, dependability, and ability to solve problems and get the job done.

Above all else, Mike was devoted to his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose greatest joy came from spending time with those he loved. He enjoyed reading, solving puzzles, learning new things, listening to music, rainy days, and caring for animals. He will be remembered for his intelligence, quiet wisdom, kindness, unwavering loyalty, and the steady guidance he offered to family and friends.

Mike was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vicki Lynn Doering; his parents, Leroy and Betty Doering; and his son, Jeremy Doering.

He is survived by his daughter, Kina Scantlin; his granddaughter, Katherine Bartz and her husband, George; his cherished great-granddaughters Reagan and Sophia; his brothers, Robin Doering and wife Sharon, Kevin Doering and wife Christine, and Scott Doering and wife Lori; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members and dear friends who will miss him greatly.

A private memorial service celebrating Mike’s life will be held in Gaylord, Minnesota. Family and friends will be notified directly.

Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Family and friends are welcome to attend. Additional details will be shared once arrangements have been finalized.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to a local women’s shelter in Mike’s honor.

Mike lived a life defined by service—to his country, to his family, and to everyone fortunate enough to know him. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.
