Carolyn Gentry Doetsch -- beloved mother, gifted educator, generous friend, and lifelong sports fan -- passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2026, in Herndon, Virginia, surrounded by her children and brother.
Carolyn was born Aug. 3, 1945, in Farmville, Virginia, the first child of Pankey Brooks Gentry and Charles Rogers Gentry. She grew up in Richmond, riding the buses around town with her brother Bill, visiting family on their North Carolina farm, and playing baseball with the neighborhood kids. She graduated from Hermitage High School, then earned her BS from Longwood College and her MAT in Mathematics from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, whose Tarheels she supported for the rest of her life.
Carolyn dedicated her life to teaching high school and community college students. She began her career in 1966 teaching Math in Richmond, Virginia. She taught in several different cities before settling in Virginia Beach in 1978, where she taught for almost 37 years. She became one of the first teachers of Advanced Placement Computer Science and Statistics and enjoyed reading AP exams in the summers. She was a creative and patient teacher who was dedicated to student success and the support of her colleagues.
Carolyn was a devoted mother and friend whose love, support, sacrifice, and strength formed the foundation of our family. She made her house a home for her children' s friends, many of whom she knew well. After moving to Reston in 2011, Carolyn found a supportive community through neighbors, water aerobics classes, and church. She delighted in being a grandmother and enjoyed shepherding Marcy and Ada to various activities and cheering them on in every pursuit. She found deep satisfaction in nurturing others—whether in the classroom or at home—and leaves behind a legacy of curiosity, determination, and caring.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, sister Catherine Gentry, cousin Anne Brooks Mahoney, and best friend Judith Darden. She is survived by her children, Walter Lewis Doetsch of Riga, Latvia, and Sharon Pankey Doetsch-Kidder, Sharon’s husband Matthew Keith Doetsch-Kidder, their children Marceline Alesha Doetsch-Kidder and Ada Lucille Doetsch-Kidder of Reston, Virginia; her brothers William Davis “Bill” Gentry and his wife Rebecca of Sun City, Arizona, and David Lewis Gentry of Duluth, Georgia; honorary daughter Richalina Howell and her daughter Chloe Sherrill-Howell; along with extended family, friends, colleagues, and countless former students whose lives she touched.
The family appreciates the compassionate care provided by the staff of Dulles Health and Rehab Center in her final days.
A memorial service will be held at Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Cornerstones, PFLAG, or the National Education Association, honoring her lifelong commitment to equity and learning.
Her impact endures in the many lives she shaped, and she will be deeply missed.
